This boat was placed in the center of the photo and it made the photo balanced because it has about the same amount of space on both sides.

1.  I think that John Szarkowski means that the photographer look at a subject differently. "Out of context means that the picture doesn't tell the entire story.
2. The public could have been shocked to see these paintings because they look realistic. The paintings were completely accurate on how real life looked.
