How to Displacement Maps

Step 1: choose an image that you would like to displace. Also, choose a pattern. For this example I am using a landscape picture of a bridge and i chose a colorful organic pattern to put over it.

Step 2: You are going to have to add a black and white layer to the background and Increase the contrast and brightness. (This will help with the over lay. Some images may not need the brightness and contrast bumped up as much.)

After doing this you will want to save it as a copy somewhere you will be able to find it later.

Step 3: Reopen the original background image.

Step 4:
You will have to drag the pattern that you choose into the background image as a new layer.(depending on where you get your pattern the image might be small compared to the background as you can see below).

This just means that you will have to scale the picture. (I will be scaling and rotating the image).

Step 5: Now you will have to displace the two images. Select the displacement map you saved earlier.

You will get the a result like below:

Step 6 : you will need to choose the blending mode "overlay"

Step 7:  Create a mask layer and begin to paint with black using the brush tool to remove the pattern from the extra areas.

When you are finished it should look similar to this:

Step 8: You ill need to apply a gausian blur to the image. It will make the harsh lines less noticeable.

Step 9: Save the image you have completed and your done!
